Multidisciplinary Leg Ulcer Clinic
At The Vein Clinic, we run a unique multidisciplinary leg ulcer clinic that attracts referrals from across Gloucestershire, Wiltshire, and Berkshire.
Every patient benefits from a joint first appointment with a vascular nurse specialist who has over 30 years of experience, supported directly by our consultant vascular surgeon.
This collaborative approach ensures that each diagnosis and treatment plan is accurate, evidence‑based, and tailored to the individual.
Our clinic is built on the latest international research and best practice. We integrate findings from the EVRA trial (Early Venous Reflux Ablation) and follow both NICE and SIGN guidelines to deliver care that is proven to improve healing rates and reduce recurrence.
By working seamlessly with local community teams, we ensure continuity of care and long‑term support for patients living with venous leg ulcers.
Case Report: Healing Chronic Ulcers in an 83‑Year‑Old Patient
One of our most inspiring cases involved an 83‑year‑old patient who had undergone vein stripping on both legs in her twenties.
Fiercely independent, she was still driving regularly and hosting large Sunday lunches for her extended family until her health forced her to stop.
Three years ago, she developed chronic venous leg ulcers and was told by her local clinic that her ulcers could never be cured and that she would “die with them.”
When she first attended our clinic, she presented with large, infected ulcers and severely weeping legs.
Through a structured programme of care, including four hospital appointments over six months, her ulcers fully healed.
Initially, she declined venous surgery due to lack of faith after years of disappointment, but with trust rebuilt, she is now preparing to undergo foam sclerotherapy to address the underlying venous disease and reduce the risk of recurrence.
This case highlights the transformative outcomes possible when patients are managed in a specialist leg ulcer clinic using modern evidence‑based treatments.
