THREAD VEINS & TREATMENT

Thread Veins – Treatment

At The Vein Clinic, Swindon, thread vein treatment is delivered as a medical, consultant‑led service, not a cosmetic quick fix. We assess why thread veins have developed and, where appropriate, use duplex ultrasound to ensure treatment is safe, effective, and long‑lasting. This approach helps prevent recurrence and avoids treating surface veins while deeper problems remain undetected.

What Are Thread Veins?

Thread veins, also known as spider veins, are small visible veins that appear close to the surface of the skin, most commonly on the legs. While often considered a cosmetic concern, thread veins can sometimes be a sign of underlying vein problems such as venous reflux that require proper medical assessment.

Why Do Thread Veins Develop?

Thread veins may develop for several reasons, including:

  • Hormonal changes, including pregnancy and menopause

  • Family history and genetic predisposition

  • Prolonged standing or sitting

  • Previous blood clots or vein damage

  • Underlying varicose veins or venous reflux

In many patients, visible thread veins are a surface sign of deeper vein issues. Treating the surface veins alone without understanding the underlying cause can lead to poor or short‑lived results. These changes are challenging to reverse.

Why Proper Assessment Matters Before Treatment

Some clinics rely on visual inspection or simple listening devices to assess veins. These methods cannot map blood flow or identify deeper vein problems. A duplex ultrasound scan provides a detailed picture of vein structure and blood flow, allowing treatment to be planned safely and effectively.

You can read more about why this matters on our page explaining why duplex ultrasound is important before vein treatment.

Sclerotherapy: our preferred treatment

Sclerotherapy is widely regarded as the GOLD STANDARD for thread vein removal. It offers excellent cosmetic results with minimal downtime. The procedure is performed by the consultant and tailored to your individual vein pattern and skin type.
