Kerecis Fish Skin Dressing for Leg Ulcers

Kerecis is an Icelandic company that in our opinion has developed one of the most promising wound dressings that we have seen for many years.

What is the Kerecis™ Omega3 dressing?

Patented Kerecis™ Omega3 is a fish-skin acellular dermal matrix transplantation technology, where complete acellular fish skin is used for tissue regeneration by transplantation.

The cod is farmed in the North Atlantic Ocean and once the skin has been harvested, the cells are all removed using a special technology. This leaves behind the scaffolding layer that the cells occupied. The Kerecis™ Omega3 dressing is placed directly over the wound and then covered for the next 2-7 days. During this time new skin cells grow in from the wound edges and fill the "holes" left by the fish cells within the scaffold. An added benefit is the anti-inflammatory and infection resistance of the natural chemicals such as Omega 3 and fish oils found in the product.

The Kerecis™ Omega3 dressing is not usually removed when the wound is inspected. If needs be, another layer can be placed directly on top.

Results of Kerecis fish skin therapy

In one study of 18 patients with leg ulceration, fish skin therapy was applied for 5 weeks, followed by 3 weeks of standard dressings. A 40% decrease in wound surface area and nearly 50% decrease in wound depth was seen in all patients with complete healing in 3 of 18 patients by the end of the study.
