Consultant‑Led Vein Assessment

Vein Assessment and Duplex Ultrasound Scanning

A comprehensive vein assessment is the most important step in diagnosing varicose veins and other venous conditions. At The Vein Clinic, all assessments are consultant‑led and include detailed duplex ultrasound scanning to identify the underlying cause of vein problems and guide safe, effective treatment.

Symptoms such as visible varicose veins, aching or heavy legs, swelling, skin changes, phlebitis or leg ulcers often indicate underlying venous reflux. Accurate diagnosis requires specialist assessment rather than visual inspection alone.

What Does a Vein Assessment Involve?

Your vein assessment is performed by a consultant vascular surgeon and typically includes:

  • Detailed medical history and symptom review

  • Clinical examination of the legs

  • Comprehensive duplex ultrasound scan of the veins

  • Explanation of findings using real‑time ultrasound images

  • Personalised treatment recommendations where appropriate

The duplex ultrasound scan allows us to assess blood flow, valve function and vein anatomy, ensuring that any treatment offered is targeted, appropriate and evidence‑based.

Why Consultant‑Led Assessment Matters

Vein disease can be complex, and treatment decisions should be based on accurate diagnosis rather than appearance alone. Consultant‑led assessment ensures that:

  • Underlying venous reflux is correctly identified

  • Unnecessary or inappropriate treatments are avoided

  • Complex conditions such as venous ulcers or recurrent varicose veins are managed safely

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a vein assessment before treatment?

Yes. A comprehensive vein assessment with duplex ultrasound is essential before any varicose or thread vein treatment to ensure the correct veins are treated and long‑term results are achieved.

How long does a vein assessment take?

Most assessments take between 60 and 90 minutes, allowing sufficient time for scanning, explanation and discussion of treatment options.

Will I need treatment after my assessment?

Not always. Some patients benefit from reassurance, monitoring or conservative management. Treatment is only recommended when clinically appropriate.
