Complications of Endovenous Laser Therapy

Fortunately, Endovenous Laser Therapy Is Rarely Associated with Serious Complications

Modern studies confirm that endovenous laser therapy (EVLT) is a safe and effective treatment for varicose veins, with a very low risk of serious complications. The vast majority of patients experience only mild, short‑lived side effects. Potential but uncommon risks include vessel perforation, deep vein thrombosis (DVT), pulmonary embolism, phlebitis, bruising or skin staining, infection, paraesthesia such as numbness or tingling, and skin burns. These events are rare, particularly when the procedure is performed by an experienced vascular specialist using modern ultrasound guidance.

EVLT is highly effective in treating the underlying cause of most varicose veins. In some cases, additional or complementary therapy may be required to address smaller veins or spider veins. At The Vein Clinic, we provide comprehensive follow‑up care, including ultrasound‑guided foam sclerotherapy or microsclerotherapy to refine cosmetic results and ensure long‑term satisfaction.

It is important to note that endovenous laser therapy is not designed for thread veins. The laser used in EVLT targets larger varicose veins and is different from the cutaneous lasers used for treating thread veins on the skin surface. Patients presenting with thread veins will be offered the most appropriate alternative treatment tailored to their needs.
